How to Recover a Site Formerly Hosted by Urban-ISP.net

I've had a few enquiries about how I recovered my domain from Urban ISP / Prime Source hosting. For those who don't know - they disappeared off the face of the planet some time ago and took a lot of people's sites with them when they did it. Most people are in the opposite situation to the one I found myself in though. My main issue was that i had not backed up my content since migrating some of my machines and so I lost that. Thankfully I had registered my domain separately, so that was safe.

From the e-mails I have recieved I think most people had their content but did not know how to free up their domain now that the cowboys at urban ISP have disappeared. So, this is what I told them to do - so far no one has told me if they were successful or not - I hope they were.....

First of all, do a whois on the domain and see who it is listed as registered to - on a Linux or Unix box this is as simple as running a whois command on the command line. For those of you that are *nix challenged, go here:

Hopefully the domain should be registered to you, with your details. If it's not then you are pretty much screwed but so far the ones I've seen all were registered to the actual person. Mostly with OnlineNIC.

Contact OnlineNIC or whoever is listed as the registrar and they should (after verifying your information) be able to help you move your domain elsewhere.

Not what you were hoping for perhaps but it's the best I can do :)
